John A. Selby, "Daddio" passed away June 3, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born on August 1, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas to Genevieve (Speaker) and Lennon Selby. He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from Oklahoma State University and while there became a life-long member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Immediately following he attended the United States Navy Officer Training Command in Newport, Rhode Island and the Naval Civil Engineering Corps Officer School in Port Hueneme, California. Upon graduation he was stationed in Thailand as the Officer in Charge of Construction responsible for building air strips. Upon discharge, John was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
John's architecture career spanned over 40 years and included projects in the government, corporate, healthcare, justice, science and sports sectors. While practicing in Oklahoma, John was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the National Disaster Medical System for his outstanding performance of Duty and Contributions during the Oklahoma City tragedy in 1995. John was credited with helping rescue workers locate possible survivors through his knowledge of the building.
Most recently John served as Chief of the Project Management Branch in the Facilities Division at NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field. He was instrumental as the Project Manager for the relocation of NASA facilities during the expansion of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and also for the construction of the Space Experimental Testing facilities at the Space Power Facility, Plum Brook Station.
John was a devoted husband to Veronica and father to Veronica Patricia and John Patrick. He loved everything about raising a family from reading bedtime stories, tossing a ball, helping with homework, cheering at games, attending school plays and finally watching as his children set out on the paths that he helped set before them. John often said "I'm a Happy Man". He loved sitting by the fire, sipping his "Irish" and sharing the conversation of everyday life. He never took anything or anyone for granted and was always mindful of how blessed he was to live in such a beautiful and supportive community, work with such incredible people and have good and caring friends and family.
John was grateful to the healthcare providers who through their knowledge, care and concern gave him the gift of time. He was profoundly touched by the generous support and "unity" of his colleagues and he was thankful for all the prayers, well wishes, goodies and the occasional whiskey that came his way during this difficult time.
Along with his wife and children, John leaves behind his sister, Linda Wells, nephews Jason Wells, Mark Lookabaugh and John David Lookabaugh, mother-in-law, Veronica Potter, brother-in-law Thomas Potter and nephews Colin and Quin Potter.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to The Poor Clare Nuns, 3501 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44111.
John's funeral Mass will be held on July 8, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Christopher Church, 20141 Detroit Avenue, Rocky River, Ohio. Following the cemetery service a reception will be held in celebration of John's life.
