Brian Paul Kelly was born on February 21, 1964, the last of nine children in the Don & Marietta Kelly family of Lakewood. Brian was born with Down's syndrome and additional physical and mental challenges, multiple and severe. Doctors said that it was unlikely that Brian would survive more than a year or two. And yet Brian defied the odds and persevered in spite of his limitations to lead a meaningful and remarkable life.
His gentle nature, warm presence and love of life was an inspiration to many in a sprawling network of families---the Kellys, McDonnells, Blakeslees, Sullivans, Simmons, Regos, Schuberts and beyond to the greater community of families and friends of those with disabilities.
He was a catalyst in the creation of the Help Foundation, the innovative non-profit organization that has provided state-of-the-art programs and services for many thousands of children and adults with disabilities throughout the region for more than 50 years.
Brian's story was a small but seminal factor in litigation and legislation brought on behalf of Americans with disabilities, including landmark Ohio cases and the national Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 that prohibited discrimination based on disability.
He is survived by his seven brothers: Donald, Kevin, Thomas, Timothy, Raymond, Patrick and Michael; his loving sister, Colleen; his aunts, Elaine Simmons and Sandra Sullivan, his uncle Tom Sullivan, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. In his own special way, Brian touched all their lives.
Brian Kelly was a gift from God and we were fortunate that he stayed with us an extra 50 years. He passed away on March 23rd, 2017, at 53.
